A long-awaited part 3 of the best-selling Preparing for A Level Russian series. This book and the accompanying audio recordings(provided on USB) are intended primarily for students preparing for the A Level examination in Russian, but is suitable for any intermediate student of Russian keen to gain knowledge of the final years of the Soviet Union while improving their reading, writing and listening skills.

The focus of the book is on Theme 4: "The final years of the Soviet Union (1985-1991)", which is considered to be the most challenging topic for students, and it requires good historical and cultural, as well as linguistic knowledge.

The book consists of 12 chapters, each chapter contains at least one vocabulary section with theme-specific words and phrases, two reading texts with questions and two listening comprehension exercises. The transcripts for all the listening exercises can be found at the end of the book and it is worth remembering that these transcripts also make excellent reading texts and resources.

The accompanying USB contains 30 recordings of relevant material.

As well as covering all the suggested sub-topics (perestroika, glasnost and the year 1991), this book contains three introductory chapters which give a brief overview of all the Soviet leaders and glimpses into the impact of the Soviet Union on the life of its citizens, including some well-known names. Every effort has been taken to cover a broad range of historical events and points of view in this book, but it must be remembered that the focus of this book is primarily linguistic and not historical. It is designed to ensure that students develop all the knowledge required for this theme for A Level examination and, hopefully, spark their interest in finding out more about the Soviet and Post-Soviet periods.
